Brief Introduction on Effective Microorganism:
The concept of ‘Effective Microorganisms’ was developed by Japanese horticulturist Prof Dr Teruo Higa (then of the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan). In 1982, Dr. Higa called this discovery ‘Effective Microorganisms’ (EM™). Since then, the use of EM™ has spread to over 120 countries. EM™ is a brand name and refers to a proprietary blend of non-pathogenic microorganisms that secrete beneficial compounds for other life-forms. The technology to use it is called this EM Technology™. EM™ is widely used in agriculture, environment, household, and healthcare. Today the EM™ inoculant and products are produced in 54 countries.
EM™ is a combination of approximately 80 different microorganisms capable of positively influencing decomposing organic matter such that it reverts into a ‘life promoting’ process. Dr Higa invokes a ‘dominance principle’ to explain the effects of EM™. There exist three groups of microorganisms: ‘positive microorganisms’ (regeneration), ‘negative microorganisms’ (decomposition, degeneration), and ‘opportunist microorganisms’. In every medium (soil, water, air, the human body etc.), the ratio of ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ microorganisms is critical, since the opportunist microorganisms follow the trend to regeneration or degeneration. Therefore, it is possible to positively influence the given medium by supplementing it with positive microorganisms.
This seminar is aimed at informing the public about everyone’s social responsibility towards our environment and how EM™ can help in the process. Dr Anthony Ng and Mr Mark Voon (both of Ipoh, Perak) are Friends of EM™ who believe in making a greener earth for our future generations. Dr Anthony Ng is a retired business consultant and an active member of the Lions Club of Ipoh Evergreen. Mr Mark Voon is a retired chemist and an environmentalist who embraced the use of EM™ in his daily life. The seminar will introduce participants to what is EM™, how it works and where it can be used. The workshop will allow participants to activate EM™ inoculant into a solution that can be used in daily life. For larger applications, a demonstration will be given on how to make EM™ Bokashi (an EM™ activated fertilizer) and how to make EM™ Mudballs which can be used in remediation of rivers and ponds. The seminar will close with a short presentation of combining Garbage Enzyme with EM™ for quicker results.
